Domaine viticole bio Château La Rose Perrière à Lussac-Saint-Émilion

Our estate

Located in the heart of the prestigious Lussac-Saint-Émilion appellation, just 15 minutes from Saint-Émilion and less than an hour from Bordeaux, Château La Rose Perrière is one of the oldest wine estates in the Bordeaux region. Our 14-hectare organic vineyard thrives on exceptional clay-limestone soils, producing elegant, fresh and authentic red and white wines that faithfully express their terroir.

Rooted in centuries of history and guided by a commitment to sustainable viticulture, Château La Rose Perrière combines family heritage, winemaking expertise and environmental responsibility to create wines of character and distinction

A historic vineyard in Saint-Émilion's satellite appellations

The history of Château La Rose Perrière dates back to the 12th century, when the Countess of Castillon commissioned the construction of the Cistercian Abbey of Faize in Lussac. The monks who lived there helped local farmers develop agricultural practices and planted the first vineyards on the limestone hillside surrounding the estate.

This remarkable history makes Château La Rose Perrière the oldest vineyard in the Lussac-Saint-Émilion appellation. The estate takes its name from "La Perrière", a local stream whose name derives from the French word for stone quarry, reflecting the strong connection between the vineyard and its limestone terroir.

In 2003, Jean-Luc Sylvain, a respected Bordeaux cooper and winegrower, acquired the estate. Captivated by the property's rich history and exceptional clay-limestone terroir, he undertook an ambitious programme of renovation, restoring the winery, modernising the facilities and revitalising the vineyard

Four generations of passion

The story of the Sylvain family is built on a shared passion for wine, terroir and oak craftsmanship that has been passed down through four generations.

The family's connection to wine began in 1961, when Pierre Sylvain acquired his first vineyard parcels. Some of these vines still contribute today to the production of Clos Les Grandes Versannes Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.

Alongside this winemaking heritage, the Sylvain family developed a recognised expertise in barrel making. Founded in 1957, the family cooperage became renowned for its craftsmanship and technical innovation. This unique knowledge of oak ageing remains a defining characteristic of Château La Rose Perrière and contributes to the distinctive style of its wines.

Today, the fourth generation continues the adventure. Claire Sylvain, trained in chemistry and biology, and Rémi Sylvain, a graduate of the Higher School of Wood Technology, work alongside their father to ensure the continued development of both the vineyard and the family's cooperage expertise. Together they pursue a common objective: producing authentic Bordeaux wines that faithfully express their origin

A beneficial microclimate

Situated north of Saint-Émilion, the Lussac-Saint-Émilion appellation benefits from a favourable vineyard microclimate, with moderate rainfall, warm summers and natural south-facing slopes that promote excellent drainage and grape ripening.

This natural environment provides ideal growing conditions for producing balanced, expressive wines with freshness and elegance

Exceptional clay-limestone soils

The vineyard is predominantly planted on clay-limestone soils, one of the defining features of the finest terroirs in the Saint-Émilion region. Clay, known for its ability to retain water and nutrients, provides freshness and resilience to the vines, while limestone offers natural drainage and contributes to the elegance, precision and minerality of the wines. Together, these complementary soil types create an ideal environment for the cultivation of Merlot, the signature grape variety of the Right Bank of Bordeaux.

The red vineyard of Château La Rose Perrière is located on the south-facing slopes of Lussac, benefiting from optimal sun exposure throughout the growing season. Beneath a relatively shallow topsoil layer of just 30 to 50 centimetres, the vines quickly encounter the famous asteriated limestone bedrock, a hallmark of the region's most prestigious terroirs.

Over time, the vine roots penetrate these successive layers of clay and limestone, drawing nutrients and water from deep within the soil. This unique geological structure plays a key role in shaping the character of the wines, bringing the freshness, tension and distinctive mineral expression for which Château La Rose Perrière is recognised today.

The north-facing slopes are dedicated to white grape varieties, whose cooler exposure helps preserve aromatic intensity, natural acidity and balance, resulting in vibrant and expressive white wines.

Grape varieties

At Château La Rose Perrière, the vineyard is planted with the traditional grape varieties that define the identity and character of the Saint-Émilion wine region. In accordance with the appellation's winemaking heritage, our red wines are crafted from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, carefully selected for their ability to thrive on our clay-limestone terroir and express the unique character of Lussac-Saint-Émilion.

The vines are trained using the traditional Double Guyot pruning system and have an average age of between 30 and 45 years. Mature vines naturally produce lower yields and deeper root systems, contributing to greater concentration, complexity and terroir expression in the wines.

Since acquiring the estate in 2003, the Sylvain family has undertaken an ambitious vineyard renewal programme, replanting approximately 40% of the vineyard. These investments were driven by the selection of plant material better adapted to the estate's soils, geology and long-term quality objectives, ensuring the sustainable future of the vineyard while enhancing the precision and authenticity of our wines.

Château la Rose Perrière Blanc, our white wine, is produced from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, three emblematic Bordeaux grape varieties. This combination creates fresh, aromatic and well-balanced wines that reflect both the richness of the terroir and the elegance of Bordeaux white winemaking.

Expertise passed down through generations

Terroir is much more than soil. It is the combination of climate, topography, biodiversity, vineyard management and human expertise.

At Château La Rose Perrière, the expression of our terroir is the result of close collaboration between the Sylvain family and Bruno Célerier, Estate Manager and Cellar Master, whose experience and dedication help shape the identity of our wines year after year.

Our environmental commitment

  Organic viticulture and biodiversity

Respect for nature has always guided our approach to viticulture. Long before organic certification became widespread, we implemented environmentally responsible practices including cover crops, organic fertilisers, reduced chemical inputs and the use of local suppliers whenever possible.

In 2018, the estate obtained High Environmental Value (HVE) Level 3 certification, recognising our commitment to biodiversity, responsible resource management and sustainable farming.

To further strengthen this commitment, the vineyard entered conversion to organic farming in 2020 and officially obtained Organic Agriculture (AB) certification in July 2023. Today, all vineyard parcels are cultivated in full compliance with European organic farming standards.

These complementary certifications reflect our dedication to producing high-quality Bordeaux wines while preserving soils, ecosystems and future generations.

Biodiversity in action

Our environmental philosophy extends beyond vineyard practices.

In recent years, we have:

  • Planted more than 1.3 kilometres of hedgerows and local plant species.
  • Introduced flowering plants to encourage pollinators.
  • Sown natural green fertilisers between the vineyard rows.
  • Restored traditional stone walls that provide habitats for beneficial wildlife.
  • Installed beehives.
  • Introduced sheep, goats and poultry to support natural vineyard management.
  • Implemented water reuse and waste recovery initiatives.

Every member of the team is regularly trained in sustainable viticulture and environmental best practices.
